In today’s gospel, it says that Peter was “distressed” that Jesus asked him a third time if the loved him. The verb may also be translated “grieved or sorrowful.” So, why was Peter in such a sad state? Most commentators talk about Peter’s need to redeem himself after denying Jesus there times during his passion. While that may very well be true, there may be another reason that is more applicable for us, remembering that Jesus did not chastise the apostles following the Resurrection. Jesus has a special role in store for Peter. He wants to make sure Peter understands this. Repeating something three times (Holy, Holy, Holy) means that it receives highest emphasis. Jesus has a lot riding on Peter’s response. For us, when it seems that we are being tested, tried or overburdened, maybe it is Jesus asking us, “Do you love me?” Like Peter, he wants to see how we will respond.
