The fourth Sunday of Easter is Good Shepherd Sunday. It is one of the most beloved images of Jesus in sacred art. Each year, the gospel reading on this day gives us an insight into how much Jesus cares for us. Shepherds in Jesus’ time were not of the highest character. Like the Nativity story, they were out in the fields for a reason--nobody wanted them in town! To use the image that a shepherd could actually be “good” would have gotten the attention of the listeners. Hopefully, it gets our attention, as well. If he laid down his life for our salvation, will we follow where he leads us.
