The passage in today’s first reading from Jeremiah comes right before the capture of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. The future looks bleak and hope is nowhere to be found. In the midst of the pending disaster, God through Jeremiah, sends a message of hope. Instead of rubbing it in their faces, God states the facts: you broke the covenant and did not worship me. He then goes on to offer hope for the people by saying he will establish a new covenant with them. (Although it will be 49 years before the return from exile.) God always offers us a “new” covenant, as well. He continually call us to himself through Jesus and the sacraments. He wants us with him in grace, rather than “exiled” from him in sin. Since God is constant in love for us, it is our responsibility to determine which direction we want to go.
