In today’s second reading and gospel, John uses one of his trademark verbs, “remain.” The meaning gives the image of one who “dwells” or “lives” in a particular condition. For John, evil people “dwell” in darkness; while disciples “dwell” in the light (of Christ). The context of “remain” in today’s readings is fairly straightforward--if we stay with Jesus we will do well; if we think we have a better idea and go off on own, things will not go so well. To paraphrase a common saying, “We do not have to reinvent the wheel…we just have to keep it rolling toward heaven.”
