In today’s gospel, second reading we have the beautiful image of the universal Church, “a great multitude, which no one can count, from every nation, peace, people and tongue.” Living here in southwest Idaho, it easy to forget that we are part of a Church that 1.3 billion members. (1.3000,000,000 looks more impressive!) Every Sunday the Mass is celebrated in over 300 Languages and dialects. Even though the numbers are huge, each and everyone of us has a role to fill. Our individual holiness or sinfulness affects the entire Church. Our activity or idleness affects the future of the Church. It is easy to think that someone else will do the work. If the apostles had that attitude, we wouldn’t be reading this!
