It is so hard to preach about the Holy Trinity without getting theologically into trouble. In the past there had been even church leaders who made blunders while speaking about the Holy Trinity. I remember one priest mentioned there are three gods in one person. After correcting him for this theological mistake, five minutes later it was announced, ”there are three persons in one God.” Something that many people already knew, but it was news to some. After being a priest for so many years, it is only left to wonder who many times this mistake was done without correction. But it so difficult to try to explain without falling into a theological error oneself. And even those like St. Augustine who knew much about theology stated to decipher the Holy Trinity is like a child trying to put the whole ocean into a small hole dug in the sand. It impossible. In the past people have tried and failed miserably. Like Arius, a bishop, who became a heretic for his wrong assertion about Jesus. Arius stated, “there was a time that He was not.” Meaning there was a time when Jesus did not exist. If we look at history for a while almost half of the Roman Empire believed this heresy, but thankfully St. Athanasius came to the defense of the divinity of Jesus and the Holy Trinity. It is a reminder for all; to decipher the Holy Trinity is a futile exercise. We cannot put God in a test tube and try to decipher God’s grandeur. The best possible action to do for the Holy Trinity is to explore the Holy Trinity in prayer. It is in prayer that will be able to experience the mercy and kindness of God. It is in prayer that God will reveal himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is in prayer that we can ask God to accompany us with blessings as we journey in life. God reveal who God is in prayer to Moses. We too are called to dwell in the inner mystery of God instead to try to decipher with our big heads. Many definitions can be given rationally, but it is best to experience God in prayer and to get to know and love God more and more until we are elevated into God’s presence. One day be able to see God face to face and really know in fullness the mystery of the Holy Trinity. For now let not break our heads, but allow God’s presence to fill our hearts with what really defines the Holy Trinity, Love.
