John the Baptist is one of the prominent figures of the Advent season. He appears on the scene in today’s gospel calling the people to repentance in preparation for the coming of the Messiah. His message was for all people, including the religious leaders of the day. As an astute observer of human nature, John includes a self-evaluation for those promising to change their lives, “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” John knew all too well that talk is cheap. The proof is what a person does. As we continue through this beautiful season, may our lives be lived in union with our words, “Come, Lord.”
