For over 1,900 years, he has been known as “doubting Thomas.” Overlooked in today’s gospel is appearance of Jesus to the apostles in which he essentially gives them the sacraments of confirmation and holy orders, along with the authority to forgive sins (reconciliation).
Poor Thomas wanted proof of the Resurrection. When he received proof of the Risen Jesus; he makes the boldest of all the professions of faith in the gospels. I like to think that Jesus had a big smile on his face after Thomas’ declaration. As we also celebrate Jesus’ divine mercy this weekend. We too are able to put a smile on Jesus’ face. All it requires is us returning to him and professing that he is truly our “Lord and God,” just like Thomas!
