This parable is about receiving the word of God, and then what are we going to do once received. Thank God who keep sending Sowers to spread the seed. Hopefully, the Sowers will come out to spread the seed, because life in Christ begins with someone who takes the time to share the word of God with others because they care. We need more committed people to become agents of change, to bring people closer to God by spreading his Word. The first step is to come out, from that place of comfort, from that place of fear. Not giving it a try at all, it already failing. The Sowers need to come out from their “hiding place” and accept the call from God to spread the Good News. But hopefully, the Sowers can be more careful while spreading the Good News, so more seeds will land in good ground. This means prior preparation. Prior formation. Not just good intentions. One can imagine the Sower taking the seeds in a good bag, a brown bag around his shoulders. A bag full of knowledge where the seeds are kept safely. All these to say, the Sower needs to be properly equipped before going out into the field. It is interesting the Our Lord does not mention much about the preparation of the Sower himself, but one can only wonder why he spread the seeds in such a random way. He could have planted the seed in a pattern, careful to make sure where they would planted. You can almost imagine the Sower kneeling, and gently placing the seed on the good ground, and covering with dirt. But this did not happen, the image the Lord gives us it seems the Sower just wanted to finish the job quickly and just threw the seeds everywhere. I think we can focus on the Sower himself and say in our task of evangelization we need to be purposeful. We need to prepare the land first, so many seeds may sprout in the right place. Some have water-down the message of the Lord so much and want immediate results and so they just spread the seeds everywhere. The people then sprout (using this image) everywhere: in the rocks, in the spines, or the pathways and easily revert to their former way of life. As Sowers of God’s Word, we cannot take this mission lightly. We need to prepare with right equipment, study the land first, and then gently place the seed on the good soil. To be a good Sower it not just about unbridled energy without formation, and without a plan. It is just not about going out just because we have something to say. I do not know what would be worse for the Sower not to go out at all, or to go out and “regarla” or roughly translated “to spread it our carelessly.” Let us pray for more Sowers to be sent out who know what they are doing, plant in the right place, and wait for good results in the thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.
