Every year on the First Sunday of Lent the gospel is an account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. St. Luke shows how Jesus resisted the devil’s tempting by food, power and pride. For most of us, the temptations we incur are much more subtle and sneaky. Yet, the method Jesus uses will help us overcome the tricks of the devil. Jesus is always calm. When we remain calm, we are able to see temptations more clearly and avoid them. Jesus names the temptation. By naming it, we are more conscious of the temptation. Finally, Jesus is attentive. He realizes that the devil is trying to pull him off course, just like he tries to do to us. It is important to remember that as long as we have a pulse, we will have temptations.
