For a variety of reasons, it is easy to get off track in our spiritual life. With so many things going on in our lives, we often lose focus. By all accounts, the man in today’s gospel was doing very well. He kept the commandments and God had blessed him with wealth. However, when Jesus invited him to take the next step, he went away sad because the tug of his possessions was so strong. We don’t know if he went home, thought about it, and later returned to follow Jesus, or not. Jesus uses this situation not to chastise the wealthy, but to show how easy it is to focus on the wrong things. Instead of the size of the bank account, our benchmark should be, “Am I moving closer to heaven?”
