The Third Sunday of Advent is also called Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word for ”Rejoice.” The idea is that we are drawing close to the commemoration of Christ’s birth. However, there is more to the story (especially since we know how it ends). In the second reading, St. Paul places “Rejoice” in union with “pray without ceasing” and “give thanks.” Together, the three activities lead us to doing God’s will for us. Doing God’s will then prepare us for Christ’s second coming or our death, whichever occurs first.
