We tend to think of grace and sin as personal matters; “ I am holy” or, “ I am a sinner.” We often forget the communal aspect of our actions. As St. Paul continues his first letter to the Corinthians (yes, he’s still upset with them), he emphasizes the communal nature of the faith. The beautiful image of the Body of Christ conveys that each of us has a role to play. Just as if I have a headache, the rest of my body is out of kilter, so too does the manner of my life affect the entire Church. Each sacrament raises the holiness of the church, each sin lowers it. Instead of complaining about how things are, or wanting things my way, maybe my first thought should be whether or not I am making things better by the way I live my life.
