Celebrating Mary’s assumption into heaven, while held from earliest times, was formally defined as dogma only in 1950. Most of the time when we think of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we conger up images of a perfect woman. Granted, being conceived without original sin gives a person a good start in life. Yet, we don’t know if she was a good cook, or not. Did she keep a tidy house, or were a few things out of place? Most important for us is Mary’s model of discipleship and openness to the will of God. In this, she is perfect. Although we may fall short of her example, we strive to follow that example to the best of our ability. Her assumption is a model for all who keep trying to do God’s will above their own .
