A sign that the resurrection has taken hold in a person’s life is that they are no longer focusing on trivial things of the earth but rather are putting all their heart in the things of heaven where the glory of God will shine as a bright light in full splendor. In the first reading is clear the disciples are having a problem whether it was necessary to have circumcision to be admitted into the fold of Christ. Some found it a necessity and others like Paul and Barnabas did not deem it necessary. A great argument broke out. The writer used words to try to minimize the problem by stating “there arose no little dissension and debate,” however the problem was so big they had to send some representatives to the apostles to get their response. This crisis showed that even in the Early Church there were problems. It wasn’t perfect because from the beginning humans are part of the church and where there are humans there are problems. Looking back, one can wonder why they made a fuss about this situation. However, dissention continues to happen with very trivial things even to this day. The dreaded Sunday night email about something that was not liked on Sunday Mass keeps on coming. The uncomfortable phone call on Monday morning complaining about someone in the church keeps coming. People (like us) keep complaining about things in the church. Some keep on “coming down” with different complaints. Instead of transcending to go up to the new and eternal, holy city of Jerusalem, that is heaven, they keep wasting their energy on such trivial things. They take what is a human precept and want to make it a mandate for all others to follow. They are unhappy with their lives and want to upset others with their teachings. Instead of focusing and dedicating their lives to the service of the Gospel they go on complaining and putting burdens in others beyond what is necessary. They become excessive in following rules made by man and forget to love others made by God. There are couple of solutions for this type of behavior that does not lead closer to the splendor of God in heaven. One, listen and keep the words of Jesus. In the past there was a little bracelet that said, “What would Jesus Do?” If Jesus didn’t say it or asked to be done, then perhaps its something man made. An unnecessary rule that will not lead closer to salvation. Second, trust the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will teach everything to the Church and will remind all what is important through the Magisterium. As seem in the Acts of the Apostles it was the leaders that help resolve their issue, for the church leaders are placed by the Holy Spirit in their ministry for guidance. As mentioned before, when there is a tendency to complain about trivial things let us see the greater scheme of things and remember “my complaint is important, but my salvation more.”
