Every year on the Sunday following Easter the gospel is the account of “ doubting” Thomas. While it is easy to focus on Thomas’ request for proof of Jesus’ resurrection, to understand his Divine Mercy we need to look at the first part of the gospel. For most of us, if we were in Jesus’ position, the first words out our mouths to the disciples would not have been, “Peace be with you.” More likely, they would be some sort of chastisement for abandoning us in our moment of need! After his wish of peace, Jesus continues with the gift of Holy Spirit and the authority to forgive sins. In his great mercy, Jesus does not want us far from him in sin, he wants us close to him in holiness. This is his wish for us. As always, it is up to us to take advantage of it.
