He has done all things well. Now He is seated at the right hand of the Father. Now it is our turn to continue to carry out His mission to the ends of the earth. Once I asked a theological question to one of my professors: why the resurrected Jesus could not stay with us in his resurrected state for ages unending? His response was that even in his resurrected state his presence would still be limited. The resurrected Jesus would have to appear here and there once at a time, but in the Eucharist, He is present at all the altars in the world simultaneously. As the preface of the Ascension recalls he did not ascend to distance himself from us but that were the head has gone, the body may follow. Jesus ascended so He can be at all places at once in his Eucharistic presence, but also because his mission had been fulfilled. There was nothing lacking in his mission. He said and did everything he wanted to do. Everything he was entrusted to do by his Father. He fulfilled all of God’s plan of salvation. He did not hold back. After he resurrected, he did not give big speeches, or really taught anything new, He just breathed the Holy Spirit upon them and entrusted them to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The resurrected Lord was brief and just recalled what the scriptures needed to explain about Him. His mission was fulfilled, he even descended to hell to preach the souls of the just and bring out them out of there. Jesus gave it all. He descended from heaven to earth a big leap, from earth to the cross, from the cross to the grave, from the grave to hell until he could no more, thus fulfilling everything. Now it is our turn to be the hands, the feet, and the body of Jesus to others as we continue his mission of salvation to the ends of the earth. The framework has been given. The blueprint has been handed out. It is not that Jesus is just sitting comfortably at the right of the Father, but he has done his part and now it is our turn to do ours. He is sitting at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. We cannot just be stupefied looking at the sky waiting for Him to come back, but we must continue his work. Following His example of love, nourished by His Body and Blood, we are now called to manifest his saving power to the nations. Knowing He is with us until the end of the age we are called to carry out his salvation to the ends of the earth.
