In today’s gospel, John the Baptist calls Jesus the “Lamb of God.” (In fact, he used the same title seven verses earlier.) While we are familiar with this title for Jesus from its use in the Mass, its significance is very profound. Lambs were the animals used in sacrifices for reconciliation and communion after people had committed sin. By using “of God,” John the Baptist tells us how the story ends, even through there are still another nineteen chapters to go until the resurrection. Through Jesus, God entered humanity to restore humanity to Himself. As we journey through this year, may we always remember how much God wants us to be with Him.
