We tend to think of reconciliation more during Lent than we do during the Easter season. Yet, is through Jesus’ resurrection that we have the reason for and the means by which we are reconciled. Last Sunday, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins through the power of the Holy Spirit. He also reconciled “ Doubting” Thomas with the community, prompting his beautiful profession of the faith that Jesus is Lord and God. Today, in the longer version of the gospel, Peter is reconciled to Jesus and the community. His three denials during the Passion are erased by his threefold profession of love. After Peter’s reconciliation, Jesus’ instruction is important, “ Follow Me.” For Peter, and us, following reconciliation, the Lord wants us moving forward; the past is forgiven, what lies ahead is important.
