In today’s gospel we have the arrival of one of the main figures of Advent, John the Baptist. Mark begins his gospel (the oldest) with John in the desert (no infancy stories). It is as if he wants to hit the ground running so that his community (and us) will be able to hear all of the marvelous things Jesus did for our Salvation. During this first part of advent, as we focus on Jesus’ second coming at the end of time. Isaiah’s quote applied to John, “ Prepare the way of the Lord,” is an important reminder for us. Jesus will come again. He gets to choose the time and place, not us. It is our responsibility to be ready. We can’t say he didn’t give us adequate notification!
