At first glance, St. Paul’s admonition to the Corinthians in today’s second reading sounds like he is against marriage. A closer look shows that it is not the person’s marital state in question, rather how well that person is able to follow Jesus’ teachings. Paul knows that it is easy to become derailed on our spiritual journey by a variety of distractions. His concern is that we remain committed and focused. It is not always easy, but it is possible. Practice may not make us perfect, but it will make us a lot better than if we never tried!
