Every year, the gospel for the First Sunday of Lent is the temptations of Jesus in the desert. It is a an important reminder for us, as we begin this holy season, that Jesus was tempted just like us. His success resisting the temptations is a model that we are able to imitate in our lives. To resist the devil’s temptations, Jesus was aware he was being tried. When we fall into temptation, it is usually because we’re not paying attention. Second, Jesus remains calm. He doesn’t overreact to the temptations. He uses logic, instead of emotion, in the situation and makes good decisions. As we go through Lent, and the rest of our lives, we will have temptations. Following Jesus’ example helps us avoid the snares the devil places before us.
