The story of the Magi is familiar to all of us. The Magi journeyed from the east to worship the newborn King. One bit of irony that is often lost in all of this is that this event only occurs in Matthew’s gospel. His community was primarily composed of Jewish converts to Christianity. Having “foreigners,” who had traveled a great distance, be the first to worship Jesus was a strong message from Matthew. As we reflect on this beautiful feast, may we be open to Matthew’s message: if the Magi came from so far away to worship Jesus, what am I doing to worship him?
