Today the joyful Christmas Season comes to a close with the celebration of Jesus’ baptism. We know, of course, that he did not need to be baptized. He did it to sanctify the baptisms of those who would believe in him. Liturgically, the Baptism of the Lord serves as a bridge. Not to put a damper on all of your joy, but Lent begins in 7 1/2 weeks! In eight weeks, the first Sunday of Lent, we will hear what happens following the baptism, his temptations in the desert. On the second Sunday of Lent, we will hear a similar voice in the gospel account of Jesus’ transfiguration. If only our spiritual lives were synced up as nicely as the readings!
