Today, we bring the Easter season to a close with the celebration of Pentecost. Originally, this Jewish pilgrimage feast (hence all the people in Jerusalem) was called Shavuot, or the feast of “weeks.” Held seven weeks after Passover, the faithful would bring the first fruits of their harvests as an offering to God. It also commemorates God giving Moses the Law on Mt. Sinai. The gift of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles confirms their role as teachers of the new Law…the Law of Christ. Since we are reading this, it means the apostles and subsequent generations did their jobs in teaching the faith. May we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us so that we may teach and transmit the faith that has been handed down to us.
