Today’s first reading from Sirach is a treasure chest on how to live. With society today so full of spite and judgment, it’s too bad more people do not reflect on these words from the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. One phrase is especially poignant, “Remember your last days.” Most people do not reflect on their mortality. If we did, we’d probably lead a better life. There will be a judgment of our souls when we die, whether we want it or not. For this reason, one of St. Benedict’s instructions in his rule for Monks was, “A Monk should have death before his eyes daily.” If we live as if today is our final day on earth, we’ll live so as not to jeopardize our eternal salvation. If we put enough days like that together, salvation will be ours!
