Today’s Gospel begins with Jesus teaching the disciples the Lord’s prayer. Luke's version is a little different than Matthew’s, to which we are more accustomed. Whereas Matthew has “Our Father,” Luke's is simply “Father.” (Matthew’s gospel emphasizes the community of the “church” more than Luke.) Regardless, the important word is “Father.” Jesus wanted his disciples to have same close relationship with God that he had. Prior to this, it would have been blasphemous for the disciples to speak to God in such a familiar way. So often, we keep God at arm’s length from some skewed form of piety. If we pray “Father,” we also need to allow Him to embrace us with his love!
